How to obtain a boating license: requirements and key steps
Obtaining a boating license is the first step to enjoy the freedom to drive a boat and discover the sea. This permit is mandatory in Spain for all those who wish to operate a recreational craft up to six meters long and who do not exceed 40 horsepower. From our yacht charter company in Marbella, we know that many people don’t know what is needed, so in today’s article we explain how to get a sailing license and what steps you should take to be fully prepared.
What is a boating license?
The navigation licence, also known as “titulín”, is an official document that allows the operation of recreational craft with certain limitations in length and power. This is the most basic course and is ideal for those who want to get started in the nautical world without major complications. Unlike other more advanced degrees, such as the Recreational Craft Skipper (REP), obtaining this license is easier and faster.
The process of obtaining a boating licence involves the completion of a theoretical and practical course, which lasts approximately six hours. This course covers basic safety, port manoeuvres, coastal navigation and maritime regulations. It is also important to note that this license does not require passing an official exam, which makes access easier for those looking to start browsing without a large investment of time.
Requirements for Obtaining a Sailing License
To obtain a boating license in Spain, it is necessary to comply with certain requirements set by the maritime regulations.
Minimum age: must be over 16 years old. If you are under the age of 18, you will need a signed authorization from your parents or legal guardians.
Declaration of physical fitness: a medical certificate is required to prove that you are in the physical and psychological conditions to operate a boat. This certificate is similar to the one required for a driving licence.
- Overcome the mandatory practices: the practices are carried out on board a boat, where you will learn essential maneuvers such as docking and undocking, in addition to controlling the boat in different situations.
Where can I get a boating licence?
There are several nautical schools and approved companies where you can take the course to obtain a sailing license. These institutions offer training programmes adapted to the requirements of the regulations in force and have boats for compulsory practical training. The course can be completed in a single day, making it an accessible option for those with limited time.
In addition, it is advisable to opt for a prestigious school with experienced instructors, to ensure that you receive quality training.
Variations of Sailing Licenses
There are other nautical titles that allow to operate boats of greater length and power than the navigation license. The most common is the Recreational Craft Skipper (PER), which allows boats up to 15 meters in length to sail and is valid for sailing up to 12 miles from the coast. This qualification, however, requires a longer course, the passing of an official examination and additional practical skills such as radio operator and night navigation.
